Although primarily known as the location of one of the two airports serving the Galápagos, Baltra Island has its own unique history and role in the archipelago. This small flat island has been a pivotal point for both military and tourism activities throughout the years.
Location
A small, flat island located near the central part of the archipelago, north of Santa Cruz Island, Baltra is often the first or last stop for visitors to Galapagos.
Biodiversity
Once a strategic airbase during World War II, Baltra has since transformed into a vital gateway for the influx of visitors eager to explore the Galapagos.

It is a gateway for arrivals and departures to Galapagos. From here, visitors embark on cruises to explore the archipelago’s unique ecosystems.
Island Wildlife
Land Iguana
Once extinct on Baltra due to human impact, land iguanas have been successfully reintroduced to the island from the nearby North Seymour Island.
Marine Iguana
Although more commonly associated with other islands, marine iguanas can also be spotted in the coastal areas of Baltra, basking on rocks and diving into the sea to feed on algae.
Sea Lion
While not as densely populated as on other islands, sea lions can occasionally be found lounging around the shores near the harbor or docks, especially in areas less disturbed by human activity.
Various Bird Species
Birds such as finches, Galapagos doves, and other migratory and resident birds can be observed around the island.
