Karanki – Magdalena Community
Close to Otavalo and Ibarra, the Karanki Community of Magdalena is the ideal place to stay when going to the Chaski Route. This Community keeps a harmonious relationship with their environment. They continue tending to their livestock, cultivating their land, and enjoying the clear mountain air and peaceful lakes as they have done for centuries. The journey includes visits to the Otavalo Indigenous Market, the Karanki Magdalena Community Stay,
a train ride to the Afro-Ecuadorian Community of Salinas and great highland sceneries to enjoy in the way. The Karanki Magadalena Social Project was promoted in order to improve the living standards of its community’s members and for them to look up for a better future. Admire the beauty of local embroidery, experience shepherding and harvesting activities, and enjoy a harmonious rhythm of life of people untouched by modern society.
When visiting the community, you can stay overnight and savor exquisite meals prepared with local crops, as well as, activities like horseback riding, mountain biking, or hiking up Cunrro Hill and around Lake Cubilche. In 2013 the National Geographic's book "World's Best Travel Experiences: 400 Extraordinary Places," proudly included the Karanki Magdalena Community as the 2nd-best destination in their category "Get to know the Locals".
